On September 22, the Regional Management of Indigenous Affairs (GRAI) of the Regional Government of Loreto and the Center for the Development of the Amazonian Indigenous (CEDIA) signed a Letter of Understanding for inter-institutional cooperation, in the city of Iquitos, in order to to join efforts for the development of activities that contribute to the protection of Indigenous Peoples in Isolation and Initial Contact (PIACI), as well as the defense of the rights and identity development of the indigenous peoples of Loreto.
Both entities agreed to establish a relationship of mutual collaboration and cooperation in order to form a Regional Trans-Sectorial Technical Commission for the defense of the rights of the Loreto PIACIs, called “PIACI Loreto Table”, which will be led by the GRAI Loreto.
The capacities of the GRAI Loreto on issues related to the protection and defense of indigenous peoples and PIACI will also be strengthened. As well as training GRAI officials regarding the work of CEDIA considering the following topics: physical and legal sanitation, strengthening of community organization, preparation of life plans, management plans and relationship with Protected Natural Areas, among others. .
The alliance will also have the purpose of proposing and formulating legal provisions, programs and regional projects with a focus on the integral sustainable development of the indigenous peoples of the different hydrographic basins of Loreto, with their full participation.
In addition, CEDIA will coordinate support actions, technical and financial assistance, training, among others, for the GRAI on Prior Consultation processes, legal physical sanitation and others agreed by the parties.
Both entities will seek to promote and advise indigenous peoples on the law and protection of natural resources and Protected Natural Areas, as well as the traditional knowledge of the indigenous peoples of Loreto.
All the aforementioned actions will be carried out for 24 months, validity of the Letter of Understanding, which may be renewed or extended by both parties.
