Representatives of the Isla Baños Peasant Community collected today their communal property title, issued with RD511-2016-GRL-DRA-L, at the facilities of the Directorate of Legal Physical Sanitation of Agrarian Property - DISAFILPA belonging to the Directorate Regional Agrarian of Loreto. This achievement has been obtained after 10 years of having started the process to obtain their communal property.
Isla Baños is located in the Ucayali river basin, Ucayali Province, Pampa Hermosa and Vargas Guerra Districts, in the department of Loreto. It is adjacent to the proposed Aguas Calientes Maquía Regional Conservation Area (ACR) promoted by the Loreto Regional Environmental Authority - ARA Loreto with technical assistance from the Center for the Development of the Amazonian Indigenous (CEDIA).
The part of free availability of the State has been titled, that is, it does not overlap any pre-existing right. However, the part of the communal territory that overlaps with Permanent Production Forests - BPP is still pending, which prevents starting a titling process and subsequent registration in Public Registries.
CEDIA supported the community in the procedure to obtain their communal property by providing technical and legal advice. The physical and legal sanitation of their territory guarantees them legal stability and, by being located in an area adjacent to the Aguas Calientes Maquía ACR, it will contribute to environmental surveillance against the illegal extraction of resources.
